This image is my individual dot exploration. While I was creating the dots I was focusing on warm colors. I used watercolor paint, permanent Sharpie marker, oil pastels, crayons, and Crayola markers to complete my dot day project. I experienced that crayons are resistant and do not let colors bleed. I also noticed and learned that Crayola markers bleed quite a bit when they get wet and are mixed. The Sharpie marker did not bleed as it is permanent. It was fun working with different mediums and mixing them all together to see what the result would be. As I reflected on the Dot Day video, I thought about how important we as teachers are do the development of our students. The girl in the video was mad, had low confidence, and wanted to quit. After her teacher told her to draw a dot, sign it, and then framed it, something big happened in the girl's life. She was motivated to work hard and find creativity. She went from being upset and thinking she was a horrible artist, to being proud of herself and motivating other young artists at an art show.
Extension:
On Dot Day in my classroom, I would give each student a paper plate and different materials to decorate that plate. The mediums I would allow students to work with depend on their age, this extension could be for several different age groups in the elementary setting. From there I would tell them to be creative as they make a big dot design on their plate. We would then put the every student's dot on a mural with a tree/branches outline. The plates would represent the colorful leaves on the tree. The mural would give the students a sense of community as they each their own person but they all make up one class together.
Another extension idea for Dot Day could be to have kids create a design on a large sheet of paper that is sectioned off so each student gets one square. They could use as many or as few dots as they'd like to create their design. This activity would also give the students a sense of community as they each contribute one small part to make one big design.
